{re-post}
I wanted to share this pumpkin devotion that I do with my family every year.It's an alternative to just only carving a pumpkin. I love this idea and the kids love it too. It teaches the gospel. It's a great tool to share with the unsaved, maybe your neighbors, kids friends from school and your unsaved family members. So here it goes....
START CARVING
And then start talking about how..........
We become a new creation when Jesus comes into our heart.
#1 Read Matthew 23:25-28
#2 Revelations 3:20
Ask: How is the stuff we pull out of the pumpkin like sin in our hearts?
(both yucky, they're inside us, sticky and smelly)
Ask: How is the way we cleaned out our pumpkin like the way Jesus cleans us out when we confess our sins?
(All the yucky stuff is taken away)
COMPLETE FACE or carve out a cross then Read #3 2 Cor 5:17 and #4 Ephesians 2:10
SWITCH PUMPKINS (I pre-carved a pumpkin to save time)You don't have to do this part. Only do this if you are doing with a group of students
Ask: How have we made this pumpkin a "new creation"?
(was a pumpkin, now a jack-o-lantern)
Ask: How do we become a new creation when Jesus comes into our hearts?
(We learn to love Him more, our light shines & we become God's children)
Read: #5 -- 2 Corinthians 4:7-10
When Jesus comes into our hearts, we become new creations.
Read:#6 Matthew 5:14-16 then LIGHT CANDLE and put in pumpkin. I would try those fake tea light candles or use a small candle to fit in the hole.
TURN OFF LIGHTS
Discuss how God wants our light to shine before others.
READ #7 2 Corinthians 4:6
Ask: How is the way the candle light comes through the pumpkin like the way God wants our light to shine?
Sing: This little light of mine.
This little light of mine,
I'm going to let it shine.
This little light of mine,
I'm going to let it shine.
This little light of mine,
I'm going to let it shine,
Ev'ry day, ev'ry day,
Ev'ry day, ev'ry day,
Gonna let my little light shine.
On Monday, He gave me the gift of love;
On Tuesday, peace came from above.
On Wednesday told me to have more faith;
On Thursday, gave me a little more grace.
On Friday, told me to watch and pray
On Saturday, told me just what to say,
On Sunday, gave the power divine
Just to let my little light shine.
This little light of mine,
I'm going to let it shine.
This little light of mine,
I'm going to let it shine.
This little light of mine,
I'm going to let it shine,
Ev'ry day, ev'ry day,
Ev'ry day, ev'ry day,
Gonna let my little light shine.
Now some say you got to run and hide.
But we say there's no place to hide.
And some say let others decide,
But we say let the people decide.
Some say the time's not right,
But we say the time's just right.
If there's a dark corner in our land,
You got to let your little light shine.
This little light of mine,
I'm going to let it shine.
This little light of mine,
I'm going to let it shine.
This little light of mine,
I'm going to let it shine,
Ev'ry day, ev'ry day,
Ev'ry day, ev'ry day,
Gonna let my little light shine.
{End of Song}
Ask: What happens when we hide our light so others can't see it?
Let's see what happens..... {cover the carving of the pumpkin}
Also, let's look at another pumpkin. If we live good Christian lives,
God's light will always shine through us no matter what.
Have a blessed time with this!!
P.S. if you are feeling convicted to not do this, don't. My convictions and your convictions are 2 totally different things. Pray of course to see if this is where the Lord should lead you.
Saved By Grace Blog
nice... I do one similar, with 2 pumpkins - one saved and 1 unsaved (sad, rotten, not cleaned out, no light...); both pumpkins having a heart shape cut-out in back instead of the top; and a whole story of how the pumpkins were born and grew up, on 3 pages they can also color... would love to share... God Bless you and your family!
